At the end of the day. It is what it is. I get it. Literally.

How on Earth do we end up using these over-used phrases and expressions? Back around 2009-2010, I often heard people say, “at the end of the day…” or “it is what it is.” in 2017, I could not help but notice that people were saying, “I get it” way too frequently for my tastes. Now we have another… “literally.”

It boggles my mind how such terms become so widespread in use. They seem to come and go like fads. The scary thing is that it seems to be subconscious. I do not believe that there are people out there thinking I should start saying “literally” because everyone is saying it. I am inclined to believe that these habits are formed subconsciously.

A mere three months since posting this article, I am sad to announce a new phrase which has infected my workplace and elsewhere – “yeah-yeah-yeah.”

I first noticed it being said on a regular basis by one of the managers in our office. It has since spread to one of the juniors and now another veteran employee. I hear this phrase dozens, if not hundreds, of times each day. I have gone on to hear it on radio, podcasts, and in public.

What on Earth is happening here? To be honest, this new “yeah-yeah-yeah” phrase sounds ignorant to me. It sounds like the person is brushing off whatever the other person has said, although in our office, I know this is not the case.

Impatiently Waiting for Spring

This morning I walked through the snow to the subway and headed off to work.

Soon after entering my office building, I checked the time on my smartphone. In the middle of the screen is where the current weather is displayed.

The temperature was 33 degrees Celsius. Wow. Of course that was not the weather in Toronto on a March day. It was Accra, Ghana, West Africa.

I swiped up through my list of cities. Seoul, Busan, Gumi, and Gwangju South Korea each showed between 15 and 17 degrees. The same was true for Tokyo, Osaka, Kumamoto, and Fukuoka Japan.

Lagos, Nigeria (also in West Africa) was displaying 33 degrees like Accra.

Then I arrived at Toronto… A blistering minus-2!

“Why do I still live here?” I asked myself.

Summer in Toronto is fantastic. The weather is nice and there is lots to do. The city really comes alive during the warmer months. Unfortunately, half the year consists of terrible weather and gloomy streets.

UFO

I just finished work, sat down at the bar, and looked at the headlines. Department of Defence was trending. Curious, I decided to find out why they would be trending news. I checked a few websites and to my surprise…

A UFO sighting was declassified and being reported throughout mainstream media. I read a story and watched a video of the encounter.

I am more surprised at my reaction, or shall I say my lack of reaction. I just did not feel any sense of fear nor worry. I have always believed that we are not the only living beings in the universe.

I started thinking about the possibility of aliens coming to Earth and taking over. I still felt no fear. Part of me thinks that if something like that were to occur, it would be well-deserved for all the human race has done to this planet and one another.

Now it is time for me to enjoy my first beer of the evening.
