Music Heals My Soul During These Trying Times

These days have me battling depression. The virus that is spreading around the globe has thrown me into a state of depression. I have battled depression as long as I can remember. I have done a great job defeating it in the past and shall do so again.

Saturday afternoon, I was relaxing at home practising “social distancing” in my beautiful suite when I decided to listen to one of my house music playlists on the speaker system.

I tuned out the gloom and doom news and just sat back and enjoyed some wonderful music. Garage, deep, gospel, and soulful house provided some much-needed relaxation and inspiration to me.

Unlike many forms of popular music, I find house music is timeless. A great song remains so seemingly forever. There are songs I first heard when I was in high school that I still listen to today and never grow tired of.

Here are two songs which provided peace and tranquility to me while I laid back and tried to relax amid the turmoil:

Grateful by Kenny Bobien (vocals) and Dennis Ferrer

Music Heals My Soul by Georgia Cee (vocals) and Mikki Afflick

Crazy Times

COVID-19….

I usually do not panic or get worked up about things. I have been through a lot in life and the many personal tragedies have left me a little battle-hardened.

This virus thingamajing has got me concerned. I have never seen an event impact so many people before. People are panic-shopping in my city. It is unreal.

The true scale of these events became real to me once my favorite sports leagues started to postpone their seasons right as the race to the playoffs has begun. The NBA, NHL, MLB, MLS, and others are on hiatus. The feeling is eerie.

Thursday, a day after the World Health Organization (WHO) proclaimed the outbreak a pandemic, the panic set in around the city. It all became real to me when our company asked us to work from home Friday.

I have always wanted to work from home and avoid the crazy commute, but I did not want it to come as a result of something so sinister.

I spent Friday at home relaxing, then working, then relaxing and studying. I could get used to this to be honest.

I do worry about the spread of this virus. I really do hope that things subside sooner rather than later. I never before thought that something like this would happen during my lifetime.

Zombies

zombie-warning

Every day I run into zombies. Well not physically, but I do see a lot of them on the streets downtown.

Whenever I get off the subway and step outside I see countless people walking around looking like zombies from B-movies.

There are drug addicts walking around aimlessly, some having conversations with imaginary adversaries, others singing.

There are also the so-called “normal” people… walking around staring into their smart phones without any awareness of their immediate surroundings.

After purchasing a coffee at Second Cup, I proceeded to ride the escalator to the street level of the shopping centre. During that short journey, I spotted at least 3 people with their faces glued to their smartphones, oblivious to the world around them.

Personally, I do not use my smartphones unless I stop and stand to the side. I believe that it is not safe to walk around while staring at your smartphone.
